Fairytale Magic ~

A little fairytale magic happened this past weekend in Asheville, NC. I am so envious that I was not able to be at my friend Jenn's fabulous event, but I was a little part of it ~ she asked me to create these swan ornaments for each of the lucky guests!

I used the "good stuff" and had fun creating all the glittery & dyed elements

Each was finished off with a tiny pearl & gold crown

It was hard to pack them up and send them on their way...

but I'm pretty sure each and every one went to a very nice home.

Big Girl's Big Day ~

Today is my Big Girl's 21st birthday ~ so hard to believe!

Almost a year ago she announced she was moving 4600 miles away...for a year...luckily she has come home a few times and will be moving back in a few months. Always her style to leap and build her wings on the way down ~ it's kept life interesting. I love too that she is a sweet sentimental soul with a big heart. But this is what kids do, and we all know it will only be a matter of time before she moves out for good. It's hitting her that she won't be home for her BIG DAY ~ her first birthday away from home. She said she's missing all of us and all the special little things I have always done...

So a box filled with party things and a crown (made from a dollar store find, not my best but it will do,) were shipped off with lots of love. And I found a bakery nearby and ordered her favorite cake to be delivered.

I love making all the fun party things myself, but I came across this cool company and thought I'd share, in case you are in need of a special gift to send and you're too busy ~ these are fun!

The day may have started off with a drizzle, but it didn't stop us from finding lots of great treasures and loads of inspiration!

My friend Tracy and her gorgeous wares in Mahogany Ridge always gets us hung up for a bit...so many great vendors in this field

I love how so many booths merchandised their wares this year

Beth Hylan was on hand to chat about her beautiful jewelry made from vintage elements & mother of pearl buttons

We always bump into some fun friends ~ Jill Shwartz stopped to chat for a bit(we did see Marcia Ceppos & Wendy Addison, but decided not to interrupt their scurrying around as they picked up their treasures.)

Shop Update ~

This kit was a big hit at the Marie event this past weekend, and since some have emailed to ask if I'll have more...the answer is yes! I've listed one kit in the shop, it's sitting there all alone, but I have a bunch more and will re-list until they're gone!

Here they are all packaged up pretty and filled with lovely little vintage bits; glass buttons, ribbons & laces ~ oh my! And the finished cufflette looks super pretty on too!

Webster Flea ~

Monday morning, our last day in FL, Tiffany and I rented a car and headed out to the Webster Flea Market ~ it was amazing!

Lots of ladies from the event went also, but we didn't bump into too many - this market is huge, and only open on Mondays! We were in search of vintage tiny bits to add to our creations, which was all we could fit in our already stuffed luggage!

A little Show & Tell in the parking lot on our way out. We met up with these ladies ~ our kind of girls, they had a vintage doll head on the dash of their car ~ hysterical!

Thanks to Cassandra for a wonderful weekend with old friends and new, the memories we'll treasure forever!

Sunday we gathered together for a day of creative classes, and eating of course!

This amazing paper doll was brought in by one of the students. I found the Etsy shop here if you'd like to take a peek ~ so amazing! In her pocket there's tiny silverware

I love seeing all the different ideas and takes on the original project, I think that's what I find most fun about teaching, that and meeting all the wonderful ladies!

Cassandra hosted the Grand Ball out on the patio by the fountain ~ it was a gorgeous night, music playing, and the champagne was flowing

What a treat to leave cold and snowy New England and land here in warmth and sunshine!

I sent my family this shot by the pool and my son commented that that constitutes as child abuse! With six feet of snow, it's been one crazy winter! I wish they all could have come ~ they certainly would have enjoyed it

Right before I left I got the new iPhone :) Only problem was that I didn't know how to use it and took all the photos this first night in video - grrr!

A very fun night shopping, creating, and even a shoe fashion show. Cassandra decorated everything amazing!

My friend Cassandra has put together an amazing Marie Antoinette inspired event where I'll be teaching ~ looking forward to meeting new and old friends!

And another Make & Take ~ so fun!

She has so many exciting things planned; a vendor night with Make & Takes, a tea party at a local salon, the over-the-top Grand Ball of course, a fabulous day filled with creativity, and a day at the local flea market. My sweet friend Janet is coming too ~ we just may have to sneak off for some girl time at the spa!

Snow Day Giveaway ~

Well, the weathermen sure did predict this one ~ we are snowed in! I'm happy to just stay put ~ hubby just came in after shoveling and he looks like a snowman!

There's something so inspiring about being holed up, I feel the creative energy pulling me in a million directions; creating, baking, knitting, stitching, rearranging furniture...and of course sitting by the fire sipping hot cocoa and reading some inspiring books and magazines...

Grounded ~

Can you guess what this is...if you guessed a crying shame you'd be right
~ it's also my studio!

No wonder I find myself creating in my wonderful, serene, and clean dining room it's more my studio than the above spot, but I have to haul everything downstairs and pack it all up again - it's not really working - nothing gets put back in it's place - this is when things started getting out of control. Hopefully exposing my dirty little secret, I'll be shamed into taking action - there's only so many times I can close the door on this mess...not to mention I cannot find things!

There was an attempt about a year ago to get organized...really, but I have a problem - I keep buying more treasures and my organization systems haven't kept up. I know, it's hard to believe I could call them "treasures" when I'm treating them this way! Did I mention that I can't find things (aka treasures,) I know they're in there, somewhere...

Everything in their place makes for a happy space, right? That would do my heart good right about now! I guess I've just given myself a little intervention, and you are all witness', no more denial...things have become unmanageable...I'm not one for New Years resolutions, but with deadlines coming up this is priority #1

So I'm officially grounded until I clean up this big mess!

Alright, I'm setting the timer for one hour and I'm heading in - that's a start! I'm not sure when, but I will post a spiffied up space soon...

Hello all ~ I know it's been a while...OK a long while since I've blogged! We have had on going computer issues ~ I'm still recovering! Anyway, I wanted to share some fun news...
My apron was chosen by the Where Women Cook team for their launch party next week in NYC! Do you think that Ree or Mary Jane may twirl around cooking in my apron ~ that would be fun to see, I'm huge fans of both. Ree has been a new obsession of mine, this summer I read her Black Heels to Tractor Wheels, a true love story and loved every minute of it! She has been my go to girl for all things yummie lately. Last night I made these sinful goodies ( I can't add a pic because I'm-still-not-there-yet, but soon!) And Mary Jane, I couldn't help but think of her and be inspired this summer as I grew my very first organic veggie garden.

Last year as I flew to Silver Bella I whipped up this apron for the event ~ I think that was the first moment I had to actually sit and get peaceful with a needle and thread in hand. It's made from a vintage petticoat, complete with stains, and I embroidered a "Birds of a Feather" design on it using bits of French fabrics, old lace seam binding and buttons. Jo Packham was the guest speaker at the event and her generous loving spirit and kind words had the whole room in tears! If you have the opportunity to get a hug from her, you will feel blessed ~ she's a very special lady

Here's a very dark pic of me at the Silver Bella Vendor Fair...can you believe it's all I have. I was so torn over sending it, you know how we get attached to things we create (it would not be returned,) but glad I listened to that little voice as I stood in the post office that said send it!

Anyone heading to the launch? I am going to see what I can do to re-work my schedule so I can go! My sweet & amazingly talented friend Tiffany will be photographing the event, one more reason to head to the Big Apple!

So, like food we create for those we love, this post is really about all the generous women who share so much of themselves, and have touched me in so many ways. I'm thrilled that a little piece of me will be shared and I hope that whoever sees it will feel the love that I put into it

Good morning and thanks for stopping by for the Coop Tour!

We've named the coop Chaumier de Poule ~ the Hen Cottage ~ no roosters here!

As a kid we had chickens and we did have fun collecting the eggs and riding them around on our bike handlebars, but for the most part I wasn't too thrilled about them. Back in March (after a friend started a flock) I got the idea to start my own. We ordered some Bantam Buff Brahmas (Pearl & Daisy) from My Pet Chicken and the rest were purchased from our local feed store - Fiona (Barred Rock,) Blue Bell & Little One (Araucana,) Buttercup (Buff Orpington,) Goldie (Golden Laced Wyandotte,) and Speckles (Speckled Sussex,) I know real original names!

As far as chickens go we have been so lucky to have a very harmonious coop, all get along so well

So for the coop ~ we were fortunate to have an existing large shed - one part is an old outhouse, now covered ove,r where we store our firewood, and the other is a small stable, I always dreamed of turning into a potting shed, but never thought it would share space with chickens! It all blends and works out so well. Aside from most of the wood and chicken wire, everything else we had on hand from my flea market adventures

The nesting box I made from an old cabinet top found on the side of the road, and after a few modifications, voila, a sweet nesting box. So far only 4 of the girls are laying - the bantams like to use the nesting box and the big girls like the basket ~ go figure!

The chandelier I bought many years ago on a trip to Colorado. It really was the piece that decided the decorating direction, that and the old dark bureau ~ it's all very French Country don't you think?

We decided to go all organic, so everything we feed the girls is pesticide free. Every day they get yogurt which they go crazy over ~ it's like ice cream to them!

From noon on I let them out to free range, after (most) have laid. I have noticed a couple of layers suddenly skipped a couple days here & there, hmm, I'm curious if they are laying in the yard - so far I have not found any hidden nests

One of our favorite things to do is watch "Chicken TV,' better than real TV - they are just so funny! People ask all the time if the chickens will run away (since we're only partially fenced in) funny thing about chickens are that they kind of know their parameters, once & a while they go just over the neighbors stone wall, but haven't ventured farther, and they all return to the coop to roost when the sun starts going down - it's amazing!

Coop Tour {Postponed} ~

Hello all ~ I know you're stopping by to see the Coop Tour, and I'm sorry to say we had to postpone it. Some needed a bit more time and really wanted to be included, so rather than only show you a few, I've decided to wait because the coops are just too amazing, and I know how much work & love goes into creating them. When we started this whole backyard chicken project we knew we would use the shed off the back of the house. I have to give my hubby so much credit here ~ he was the muscle behind it all, not only that but he has donated 6 weekends to this project...not sure why we thought renovating would be a snap!? Thanks honey, you're a peach & a keeper!

Guess that's what he gets for being my "yes" man ~ he's good like that. He does not like me to take his picture though ;) I was beside him every step of the way, a real bonding experience; nailing, painting & decorating. One thing we discovered was that we speak different building languages, in the end we realized we meant the same thing ~ it was hysterical. Finally he knows what I mean when I say I need a banger thingie, and I'm not talking about a hammer

I've had this mag cover since '05, and knew someday it would be the inspiration for my potting shed, little did I know that it would also be shared with a flock of chickens!

Now that they're older we let them roam the yard a bit ~ they love it, and it's so fun to see them pecking about ~ they're great little weeders too!

To Haiti With Love ~

Yesterday this little pixie came to visit, isn't she sweet ~ so gentle, curious and happy

We checked in on the vegetable garden ~ she loved the pebbles, dirt & bugs, not a fan of cilantro or onion stalks though

What perfect timing to have a real baby to model one of the baby quilts I made for Quilt Haiti

I think she liked it

I'm hoping it will make the little ones who get these quilts smile just like this

They were just simple 5" squares; using 5 different patterned fat quarters (look at me talking like I know quilting lingo - lol!) Some muslin that I stamped with foam alphabet stamps & fabric ink (they were bigger & cheaper than regular stamps - I found them in the stencil/paint section at Michael's.) It's not really a "quilt" because there is no batting on the inside or topstitching, just cozy cotton chenille on the back

A Flea Market Picnic ~

I have wonderful friends...

Heather, Lisa, Tamsen, Janet & I

Many years ago Tamsen started the tradition of packing a picnic lunch to bring to Brimfield. I didn't really give much notice to the large backpack she hauled - I was focused on treasure hunting after all. Not only was it sweltering hot, but that thing must have been heavy! When we all decided it was time for a lunch break, she chose a spot in the shade by the pond...then out of that backpack came a vintage tablecloth, and one by one delicious things kept coming; chicken salad with rolls, fruit salad, homemade brownies, and other goodies. We were amazed and grateful ~ it made a perfect day all that more special ~ so sweet!

Keeping with the tradition, I sent out an e-mail asking everyone what they'd like to bring for our picnic lunch. Well...Lisa felt paper & plastic just wouldn't do, so she took it upon herself to bring china plates, crystal glasses, and she made cloth silverware holders tied with a bow for each of us ~ can you imagine!?

...and sweet Heather surprised us with gifts ~ eeek! Saltshakers filled with vintage mercury glass beads ~ that put us over-the-top

I don't think we could possibly top this years picnic ~ I love that each year the tradition and the circle of friends has grown

Brimfield Treasures ~

Brimfield Flea Market was wonderful ~ of course

We spent a lot of time at our first stop, Mahogany Ridge, where my new friend Tracy and Rose Mary Warren shared a space ~ we went crazy for all the fabulous millinery! My friend Lisa and I bought straw hats ~ I'd been wanting a new one

Along our treasure hunting we bumped into Marcia Ceppos and Wendy Addison. Our paths kept crossing throughout the afternoon...I think they were stalking us ~ lol! Birds of a feather do flock together! It was great to stop and chat with them for a bit

I gravitate towards the creamy palette, and found this amazing silk net piece with hand sewn beads on it ~ an absolute steal!

I can't resist mother-of-pearl doll buttons whenever I see them

Nesting on Main ~ love the keyhole cut out

Another one of our favorite fields is Central Park . Don't miss a stop at the tablecloth lady (that's what we call her anyway,) all tablecloths are $10. I bought a very Anthro linen round tablecloth with embroidery & lace for my outdoor table ~ always a great stop

A couple of practical finds ~ glass knobs & brackets for the garden shed & chicken coop, silver & silverplate, lots of tiny treasures for mixed media projects...and the list goes on!

We left feeling like we didn't get our fill ~ so much ground to cover and so little time

I can't believe Brimfiled Flea Market is next week!

Of course I needed to make a new market bag to carry all my flea treasures in

...and I made this wonderful scrap rose pin to put on it ~ you can get the tutorial here. I've made similar, but this one is constructed different ~ Rebecca is so very clever!

There's a reason why I saved those tiny scraps of all my favorite French linens ~ I knew someday I'd use them. I know you guys get it ~ some people around here that don't ;)

I love my new bag ~ creamy linen, ruffles, lots of room for everything, and all my favorite colors rolled into that yummie rose

Even a little pocket to keep my Brimfield bucks in (stamped with permanent fabric ink)

I modified a bag pattern that I had designed to create a bag similar to this one, and if you'd like a fun ruffly bag, check out these ones here ~ love her!

Motley Crew ~

I brought the babies outside for a few minutes to enjoy the yard & sunshine today, it's really still too cold for them since they don't have all their big girl feathers yet

They stuck together, a little peeping flock and froze every time a crow cawed

At this stage they look a little motley ~ don't you think?

Coop reno has begun, so hopefully they'll be in by the end of the month ~ fingers crossed!

Eventually they all climbed up on me ~ guess they know who mommy is

My New Babies ~

Daisy, Pearl & Abigail (Esperanza) ~ it's a long story...

They arrived by mail tuesday, and sadly only 3 (of 5) survived the overnight trip ~ poor babies, and one looked a bit shaky, but she had water, food & nice warm heat and she came right around ~ thank goodness!

Everyone has stopped by to meet them, and the kids and their friends are giving them lots of love

The end of April I'll add to the flock from my local Agway

...just so cute!

...and so funny, already doing their chickeny things, like the backward shuffle ~ so cute I tell ya!

They weren't so interested in co-operating for the photo shoot, but they loved the moss and the decorations. They will be the hit of our Easter gathering today!

Coop Dreamin ~

With the kids almost grown I guess hubby and I still have the need to nurture ~ we're putting in a vegetable garden and getting chickens. I've been dreaming (obsessing) about chickens and coop design for months now...

My friend Clare got chicks this past fall, which made us think, maybe we'd like to raise backyard chickens too. She and I have ordered some bantams. They lay the tiniest eggs ~ perfect for decorating and projects, so by this time next year I hope to have a bunch to play with

...I have a good idea, one where I use my head to create something without it being endlessly laborious & tedious. Like how I first printed this doll ~ from my ink-jet printer. It worked perfectly, but when you have to do a lot ~ I envisioned the (potential) disasters

I was so excited when I got the fabric back from the printer ~ it came out perfectly, thanks to my wonderful sister. I sent her my artwork and she sent it back ready for the printer ~ lucky me!

Now I can cut each section up for my kits ~ how wonderful is that!?

It could be dangerous ~ I'm already dreaming up new ideas...

The amazing details and fun that Lisa has put into Art Opera makes me wonder if she is Wonder Woman! I am counting down the days to meet old friends and new...of course there is still much to do; like wrapping pretty packages, making flowers bloom from paper, and creating lots of other Springtime magic ~ hope you'll join us ~ hope there's still room!?

My project "Belle of the Ball" will be so much fun, even if you've never done embroidery before! There's lots of options to do as much or as little hand stitching as you'd like - in the end you will have a lovely embellished doll who will always be sitting pretty, and just may hold some pins for you!

...the back - by the time you see it I'll probably have added more ~ I can't put it down!

And, I'd like to let you know that my friend Crystal, of Vintage by Crystal, will be sharing a table with me during the Vendor Fair! Recently I spent an afternoon creating jewelry with her and Heather, at her home and I can tell you that her new Spring wares are super sweet!

Snowballs to Blooms ~

Anthropologie always delivers fresh visual inspiration ~ during the holidays they did huge snowballs made of paper & plastic

an ostrich made from rolled up book pages

It was a magical scene...but now the snowballs have melted and the whole store is in bloom!

At first I was surprised by all the plastic ~ then upon closer inspection, realized they are made from plastic bottles {genius,} and sprayed the most delicious Spring hues! The bike wheels add the perfect bit of whimsy

if you're in need of an inspirational lift ~ head out to your nearest mall...

We got more snow this week, and woke to a few flakes falling this morning ~ but Spring is definitely starting to melt Winter away ~ hooray!

A message to my loves ~

I'm a big fan of love, hugs & kisses, and all things sweet, sentimental & romantic ~ they're the best!

...aren't they just too cute

Lately we have a lot of {new} young love here, with both girls ~ I love all the life and joy they bring into our home.
It's reminded me of our first Valentine's Day...the day he carried a giant card under his puffy down jacket, all over town, only to give it to me at the end of our "date" (we were 16.) It makes me smile to remember that day. We do love when they do goofy things for love, don't we!?

The girls have been filled with anticipation over Valentines Day. It's no wonder why some guys aren't big fans...if only they knew, it's all the little moments and sweet sentiments that will be treasured. The Little One's friend gave her a teddy bear and made her a card from red & green felt ~ too cute...and Big Girl's friend gave her roses (which Smoochie loves to eat - just roses for some reason, and note to sender...he prefers pink) chocolates, a teddy bear, and dinner ~ he's clearly smitten and trying very hard to woo her! Do people even say that anymore?

I whisked hubby out of town for a much needed getaway ~ that man will not stop working if I don't extract him from the premises. He put up a little fuss when I told him "surprise" our bags are packed ~ let's go! Here's the plaque that was on the old inn we stayed at ~ Valentine Hill, how perfect

So glad Valentine's Day fell on a Sunday, so hopeless romantics {like me} could celebrate all weekend!

Morning Sweetheart ~

Hope you all had a lovely day!

We started our day off with pancakes, our Sunday morning ritual, but of course on this special day I had to make them heart shaped! And we had faux mimosas ~ O.J. with Sparkling Cider garnished with a strawberry

I'm a big fan of The Wilson Farm

Here's the very best Pancake Recipe ever, from their cookbook ~

Using a whisk, beat together; 1 egg, 1 cup milk, 3 tablespoons melted butter

Sift together 1-1/2 cups flour, 2-1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 3 tablespoons sugar, and a pinch of cinnamon

Stir the dry ingredients into the liquid until moistened

Heat frying pan over med-high heat, butter lightly, and cook pancakes, turning once after bubbles form on top.

Optional: 1-1/4 cups peeled, chopped apple (1 large)
or other fruit & up to 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Serve with warm maple syrup ~ yum!

California Dreamin ~

We're in the midst of winter hibernation here, it's been ridiculously cold...I get through it by dreaming of being transported to sunny destinations, like southern Cali

Last Spring my oldest and dearest friend and her husband bought a charming 1800 Victorian farmhouse in Carpenteria, CA ~ The Linden House

They completely renovated it and bathed it in creamy whites and beachy hues ~ the perfect beach cottage with it's bright sunny interior and comfy furnishings

Every bit of it so fresh, cheery, and inviting

I absolutely love how she decorated ~ brimming with coastal charm!

Three bedrooms in all, perfect for a family getaway...or girlfriend trip

What's more inviting than a front porch to sit and watch passers-by, and another more secluded for reading or taking a cat nap

The train stops in the quaint downtown; potentially you could go car-less and just hop on a beach cruiser to get wherever you'd like to go

Maybe bring a picnic to the beautiful beach

Or take a stroll downtown and browse the
antique shops for treasures, or the farmer's market

Sweet sunny perfection in an unspoiled surf town...wish we were there!

That's what I think of all of you ~ very sweet you are! Keep donating & scooping up wonderful handmade goodness over at Haiti by Hand, fabulous creations are flying out of the shop ~ very good news ~ it does a heart good

I want to thank all of you who have purchased my kit & on-line tutorial ~ they too are flying out the door (just a few left.) I hope everyone is happily creating. The tutorial was so much fun to create, although I have to admit a huge learning curve for me ~ with all the photo editing, but I did it! I know in the grand scheme of things it's not that BIG of a deal, but my first New Years goal accomplished! I'm not looking for a parade or anything, maybe just throw a pinch of glitter in the air for me and say "yea!"

Of course I did have some help. Rosie insisted on being my assistant, and made a brief appearance in the tutorial ~ she feels like a star! And, I e-mailed my talented sister the template sketches (drawn with Sharpie marker,) asking her to "teach me" the steps to make them look professional, but she can't help herself ~ they came back all polished and done ~ I'm so lucky, she does it every time!

So many exciting things coming up; classes, kits, a swap, creative getaways, even video tutorials! Video tutorials will involve a lot less editing (on my part) which is good, but obviously I will need to fluff & buff and put something a little nicer on than my yoga gear...stay tuned

Craft Hope was created by two big hearted moms who wanted to make a difference in the world by sharing handmade crafts with those less fortunate. I love their tag line ~spreading seeds of hope one stitch at a time. And, as if their plates were not already full, and their arms overflowing, they opened their hearts wider and created

As of this weekend they had already raised over $20,000 ~ that's a lot of hand stitched love!

Another sweet and amazing soul is Rebecca who created Haiti by Hand. Originally she created this on-line shop as a place for Haitian artisans to sell their wares to help women and children of that region, however, because of the recent devastating events she has asked artists from all over the world to join her in selling their wares to help the people of Haiti. I'm sure she cannot type fast enough to keep up with all the generous donations coming in.

Both of these efforts are donating 100% of sales to Haiti

A New Year ~

and dreaming of a year full of creative possibilities!

It's been the usual busy January full of birthdays ~ 5 actually!
We don't get a break after all the busyness of the holidays ~
it just keeps on going...
not being a Winter person I'd love to switch mine to May,
that would be the perfect month to have a birthday

Slippers ~

All I want for Christmas is a pair of slippers...

Nothing as fancy as these tiny little paper ones I made

This one reminds me of the Little One's sparkly red dress up shoes she wore when she was little. Hers were more like Dorothy's. She wore them everywhere, and when they got too tight we'd go get the next size up

I love creating new ornies for the tree each year. It's fun to open the boxes and see all the different ones through the years ~ of course I don't throw any away

We got a much smaller tree this year, so I didn't put all the kids handmade ornies on ~ that may change since they're so sentimental to me. The girls haven't had any interest in helping to decorate, so guess I finally got my "grown up" tree. We'll see what the Big guy says this weekend when he comes home ~ he's my most sentimental one!

Tonight when hubby came home he asked if glittering could be an addiction "because I think you've got it!" Creating is definitely my way of staying sane during the holidays ~ it's crazy out there! The other day Big Girl and I were looking for parking and some guy started spazzing out in his car (because he had a stop sign,) we lost it cracking up, it was sooo funny (poor guy!) Big Girl said "he needs some glitter!

I Love Coffee ~

I don't drink it, but I sure do brew up a lot of it!

Dyed coffee filter wreaths were the centerpieces on each table at my recent event, and were the raffle prizes. They were a big hit! So much so that several of the women ran home to dye coffee filters, and will be back here Friday night to make wreaths ~ and I finally got my dining room cleaned. Well, I guess we call that a blank slate, right!? The glue guns will be fired up and the glitter flying!

I've added the simple dying instructions at the end of this post. Be warned though if you make one, it's the kind of thing that makes guys question our sanity ~ not mine, he's used to this kind of thing. Please share, I'd love to see your creations!

For such a fabulous event, it's disappointing to not have equally wonderful pics! If you'd like to peek at more ~ you can see them here. Several of us were having camera issues, and the lighting . . . oh, this has been a sad theme around here lately (as you can see from the very blurry pics in recent posts.)

We got the Little One, my budding photographer, a new camera for Christmas that I hope she'll share (or I'll sneak when she's at school,) a Nikon 40D, lucky girl! Maybe Santa will bring me one too...

Have fun ~

To dye filters: Dip a whole chunk/section of basket style (not cone) coffee filters in 4 cups of brewed coffee, let excess coffee drain off for a minute, separate slightly and place in dryer on med/low heat for ONLY 10 min, check, separate & fluff and put on for ONLY another 10 min - easy! Don't worry if they are wrinkled - it doesn't matter. And please, we all know what heat can do to paper, so be careful! These dry very quickly when separated. You can air dry them, but the coloring will be streaky, not uniform ~ experiment!

Colored fliters: If you want a lighter shade, add more water - if you want it slightly colored, add tea (I used pomegranate tea to make a slight pink tone,) or add a drop of food coloring to coffee - blue in weak coffee makes a nice vintage robins egg color!

One chunk/section of filters is more than enough to do a 12" wreath - you know how they're packaged in several "chunky" sections in the package?

You are a Prize ~

For Silver Bella I created Mini Prize Ribbon Kits, one for each Bella ~ 190 to be exact

These are really quite simple to make...all you need is a glue gun & glue sticks, scissors, a hole punch, and glitter or mica if you'd like

1. Glue Ruffle Crepe Trim around small disc; it will go around twice to make it nice and fluffy!

2. Punch 2 holes at top of Large Disc, and put pin ends through holes

3. Glue streamers to backside of Large Disc

4. Glue Small Disc to backside of Large Disc

5. Cut leaf shape out of vintage printed paper, and glue to front center, angled out

6. Glue Wallpaper Disc to front center

7. Make a banner ~ Cut "You are a Prize" out and notch ends
Place a dot of glue near each end and glue to front over wallpaper center

8. If you'd like, glitter & embellish

Ta~da, proudly wear your ribbon for all to know just how wonderful you are!

I have a strange obsession with name tags ~ and making them. I'm sure it's because I have such a hard time remembering names, luckily I never forget a face ~ thank goodness for a visual memory skills or I'd be sunk!

My trip began with power stitching my apron, in flight, for vendor night

I had a plan, but not a moment to do this project until I finally sat on the plane ~ two flights, one de-boarding due to mechanical issues, a looong delay and voila, it was finally done, or done enough!

I arrived excited, late, and hungry ~ missed the welcome dinner, but just in time for the group project...I did manage to find some chocolate and a peanut butter cookie

I have some very exciting news to share, and although it is a ways off, that gives you plenty of time to plan! The very talented Cassandra of My Artful Adventures, has created the most decadent Marie Antoinette inspired creative retreat, and she, Jen, and I will be teaching! My head is spinning with all the amazing details!

I'm already dreaming of how wonderful it will feel to jet out of the cold bleak New England winter and step into a glorious tropical setting ~ just check out the luxurious resort. Of course gathering together with a group of creative women will be the best part, and who knows, maybe we'll get some dashingly handsome men joining in - you never know!

And speaking of creative events, my upcoming Holiday Cone Party is filling up, so if you've been thinking about joining us, please visit the Studio and sign up! Fruits of an Autumn Weekend ~

Saturday we headed to Nesting on Main's block party. They had live music under the tent and even though it was pouring rain it didn't dampen anyone's spirits

As I'm sure I have mentioned before I love this shop! It's packed with all kinds of fabulous trinkets and treasures, all of which I absolutely NEED ~ lol!

Look how they packaged my tiny purchase ~ these are my kind of peeps!

This is what was inside; little round enamel letters. I thought I'd put one on each of the doors in the corridor (upsatairs hallway,) just for fun (oops I forgot to get an L - guess I'll have to go back.) More black, I know, I'm not sure what's getting into me...maybe my kids are rubbing off on me

Since we were so close we stopped by The Wilson Farm for some delicious treats; apple cider doughnuts rolled in cinnamon sugar were a must

The weekend ended with a hysterical covert mission, Operation Hydrangea. Under the light of a near full moon my partner in crime (who shall remain nameless to protect her innocence,) did a little clipping of our favorite hydrangea tree in town. Now before you get all crazy on me because someone stripped yours bare, it wasn't us ~ honest. We go to the same tree every year, and you don't live there. We like to think of it as maintenance, community service, simply pruning it so it will thrive and be bountiful for future generations...after all we did bring it back to life when it was so very sad many years ago

The Raven's Nest ~

We've had a beautiful September here in the Northeast, but Fall is definitely starting to work it's way in. The air is cooler, especially at night, and the leaves are starting to turn. The hydrangeas, my favorites, have turned the most beautiful shade of rosey pink ~ just waiting to be picked!

I've been having a bit of a creative burst lately too. I know you don't see much black coming from me, but I had these little ravens and they were begging for me to create a new home for them.

Art Opera ~

This fabulous East Coast event is the magical dream brought to life by the amazingly talented Lisa Kettell

Calling all costume designers...

My class ~ Belle of the Opera is a mixed media art doll project
We'll use paint, embroidery stitches, and vintage millinery supplies to create a freestanding doll. With embroidered samplers making a huge comeback, I thought it would be fun to incorporate some simple hand stitching, but fear not if you have never embroidered before. Whether your style is simple elegance or over-the-top, the emphasis will definitely be on having fun and being creative! The end of class we'll have a little fashion show, line the dolls up, and send them down the cat walk

I drew on my career in Fashion Design when I created this project; custom bridal, children's clothing, and fabric & embroidery design. My love of paper and vintage style arts & crafts has been a lifelong passion which I've switched my focus to in recent years, but fabric seems to be creeping back in more and more

On a Whim ~ Snug Harbor Farm

Over the weekend hubby and I decided to get out of town for a bit and travel up the Maine coast. We stopped at some of our favorite spots and discovered some new ones too; Stonewall Kitchen , Mother's Beach, Wells Auto Museum, The Maine Diner (had to do it ~ we were tourists after all,) Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, Harbor Candy Shop, and lots of antique stores ~ my favorites are in Wells!

What we didn't expect to find was this treasure, Snug Harbor Farm

Look at this sweet little greeter ~ a mini horse, the baby of the group. He stood only about 30" high ~ so adorable

The greenhouses were filled with the most beautiful topiary

all arranged beautifully and carefully manicured

A rusty gate leads to the house. (Not pictured are wonderful "bracket" topiary which are meant to look like they are holding up the shed.)

At every turn it was special, and the love and care they give their plants shows

We fell in love with this frog fountain ~ it would look perfect at the end of our pool

Tiara for the Queen ~

My friend Cristina hosted a swap for Marie Antoinette Mail Art group called, Le Diademe de la Reine (Tiara for the Queen.) Lucky me, I was to create her crown; and the one thing I knew for sure was she loves blue...

Since it is Summer, she would need it to be lightweight for playing tennis, shuffling kids to all their activities, and hosting impromptu backyard water play

Ah, but there's still the everyday list to tackle; laundry, feeding the troops, and household drudgery (since the staff seems to be on holiday,) so it would need to be petite, yet still capture the eye of all who pass by

My hope is when she wears her tiara, it puts a sparkle in her eye, a spring in her step, and a smile on everyone's face

I know you'll wear it well, enjoy ~

Mermaid Tea & Create ~

If you live in New England, you know it's been a wet Summer! Sunday however, the clouds parted, the skies were blue, and the sun was shining, just in time for our Mermaid's Cache Creative Tea!

There were lovely things to eat; tea sandwiches, fruit on skewers, tiny cupcakes swirled with aqua frosting topped with white chocolate shells, cookies, crackers & cheese. And delicious iced teas, each served from gorgeous glass dispensers; Herbal Tea with rosemary, mint & lavender, Citrus with slices of lemon, lime & orange, and a Fruit blend with peaches & strawberries; each had herbs and fruit floating in it and looked so summery and pretty! Guess we didn't get any pictures of it though ~ lol!

A Bountiful Trip ~

I think this blog should be called "On a Whim," because that's pretty much how I operate!

Big Girl and I decided to skip out of town for an overnight trip to visit the Big Guy. He works for an antique auction house, and there was an auction. I got a table, but now that I'm home it's not going to work where I had hoped - too high

On the way home we punched in the address to The Wilson Farm, and Linda (hubby's GPS) got us right there ~ I love her! What a great invention

I have been making all kinds of delicious things from their cookbook forever, but have never visited the farm. By the way, the cookbook is excellent!

Everything was displayed so beautifully, so I had to take pictures (we were not camera ready after sleeping on couches in Big Guys bachelor pad.)

We came home with lots of yummie treats, and we will definitely be back soon! My little local farm down the street will get me by until I can visit again

Gypsy Living ~

This little pretty has created quite a stir around here...

You may remember back at Christmas hubby gave me this chandelier, well it's up

Here you can see I added one of my favorite touches, the vintage ceiling tin (and trimmed it out)

After it went up, we noticed everything else was looking a bit tired, so up went the crown molding we've been meaning to get to, and of course then the walls and trim needed a fresh coat of paint, which led to realizing the hardwood floors desperately needed a new life...so for the past several months we've been shuffling furniture here and there. We means us, not me calling someone to do the work...no wonder I dream of dialing for services!

Last week everything finally got up and out of both the living and dining rooms to do the floors, stuff is everywhere

It was kind of fun having to swing yourself into the kitchen, and walk around outside to the sun room to watch tv, but now the push is on! My Mom and Big Girl jumped in to help, thankfully, and we got so much done

I can't wait to put everything back together. Of course it's still a 100 year old cottage with all is charming quirks, but at least the living and dining rooms look so fresh and clean and pretty ~ I love it! Oh how I wish I could freshen everything up with new furniture ~ a girl can dream!

Since we will have a house full of guests this summer, plus hosting the Mermaid Cache ~ Creative Tea, I've been chipping away at packing up and cleaning out Big Guy's bedroom to make it into a guest room. He's been on his own now for two years, so it was time. It was bittersweet, but I had so many laughs remembering his childhood as I packed up his many collections; rocks, marbles, cars & little figurines, magnets, coins, journals & writings, comics, boy scout stuff (he's and Eagle Scout,) and books. This kid has books, and most of them he took with him already!

The oil paint and polyurethane fumes must be making me loopy, because in the midst of all this Big Girl said we NEED to paint the kitchen cabinets, so of course we grabbed the nearest screwdrivers and removed all the cabinet hardware...that's about when hubby walked in from work. You know, he's such a good guy, he just quietly looked around and saved his thoughts for later...and later he shared that maybe we should finish all the other projects before moving on to the kitchen. Very good advice, so that's the plan! See, there is a plan ~ oh help!

Sugared Songbirds ~

I must confess, I'm not much of a shopper, except when I need something. Well, I needed sheets to make new curtains for the sun room, so I found myself at Home Goods. You know how it goes, you go in for one thing and you come out with a cartload!

This I could not pass up, a fun and funky decorative bird cage. The best part was that it was on clearance for $8. ~ so how could I pass it up! I have a feeling it will get lots of use. Big girl said, "It was just waiting for you!"

It's first job, a photo shoot with my new vintage style Sugared Songbirds. Come meet the models...

chair 1 ~ i just can't get enough of him, his eyes, his voice, i think he's the "one"

chair 2 ~ they're both fabulous, so much talent, and so sweet! hey, i thought you loved acoustic guitar?

chair 1 ~ i know, i do, but this guy makes me melt, he's creative and soulful, i'm just "feeling good" about him

chair 1 ~ they'll both be crazy successful, they've got a "whole lotta love " behind them. do you see their parents gushing (over them) from the sidelines ~ love that, so cool

I've been battling the worst Spring allergies and a cold all week, can't seem to shake this thing this year ~ grr! Brimfield was wonderful, lots of amazing treasures! I promise a post in a few days...hopefully I'll be feeling all shiny and new
